About the School

The Davao School for the Blind (DSB) is a non-stock, non-profit residential institution located in Davao City, Mindanao, Philippines, dedicated to the education and rehabilitation of visually impaired children. Our journey began in 1978 when a group of civic-spirited individuals formed the Christian Society for the Prevention of Blindness and Rehabilitation of the Blind Inc. Through a providential partnership with the Hildeshiemer Blindenmission (HBM) of Germany, our dream of a specialized school became a reality, officially opening its doors in 1981.

For over four decades, DSB has served as a beacon of light and a sanctuary where long-nurtured dreams find fulfillment. As a non-sectarian institution, we welcome every blind child regardless of religious background, providing them with free tuition, food, and dormitory housing.

Our Core Programs

Guided by a “One Disability Policy,” we accept blind children aged 6 to 13 who have no other concomitant disabilities. Our curriculum is designed to empower students to lead independent and meaningful lives:

  • Complete Elementary Program: We follow the government-prescribed curriculum, ensuring our students receive an education equal to that of regular schools.
  • Integration Program: We support our graduates as they transition into mainstream high schools, allowing them to co-mingle and excel alongside sighted peers.
  • Rehabilitation & Vocational Training: Students develop functional skills such as massage and guitar making. We also provide training in modern communication tools to prepare them for a digital world.
  • One Light Music Orchestra: Formed over a decade ago, our orchestra allows students to master instruments like the trumpet, saxophone, and keyboard. Our students share their talents at city events and fundraisers, proving that music transcends sight.

Impact and Sustainability

While DSB has empowered more than a hundred alumni over the years, the global pandemic significantly impacted our operations, leading to a decrease in donor support and student enrollment. Currently, for the 2024–2025 school year, we are proud to serve and care for 26 students.

We are fully registered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and authorized by the Department of Education (DepEd). As a non-profit entity, we rely entirely on the generosity of private individuals, NGOs, and government agencies to sustain our mission.

Together, we continue to ensure that every child at the Davao School for the Blind has the opportunity to reach for a brighter future.
