Davao School for the Blind Alumni Shine at 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, THAILAND — The Philippine flag flew high as the 13th ASEAN Para Games concluded this week, but nowhere was the pride more palpable than in Davao City. Three exceptional athletes—all alumni of the Davao School for the Blind (DSB)—proved that vision is not a requirement for greatness, securing podium finishes against the region’s best.

The event, held from January 20–26, 2026, saw over 1,500 athletes from across Southeast Asia gather in Thailand to compete in 19 different sports. Amidst the fierce competition, the “Davao Connection” became a highlight of the Philippine contingent’s historic performance.

Triumph on the Mats and the Board

The DSB alumni showcased their versatility, bringing home medals in both high-impact physical sports and intense mental battles:

  • Para Judo: Edmond Montecillo and Kendews Granaderos both secured bronze medals in their respective divisions. Montecillo captured his bronze in the Men’s Individual J1 -70kg, while Granaderos earned his in the Men’s Individual J1 -64kg. Competing in the J1 class (for athletes with total blindness), the duo displayed incredible technique and resilience at the MCC Hall in Korat.
  • Para Chess: On the checkered board, Evangeline Gamao solidified her reputation as a formidable “woodpusher.” Gamao helped secure a bronze medal in the Women’s Team B1 category, contributing to a strong Philippine chess showing that remained a cornerstone of the country’s medal haul throughout the tournament.

A School’s Lasting Legacy

For the Davao School for the Blind, these victories are a testament to the school’s long-standing mission of empowerment. The success of these three alumni reflects the specialized training and support the institution provides to students in the Davao region.

“We are beyond proud of Kendews, Edmond, and Evangeline,” a representative from the school shared. “Their journey from our classrooms to the international podium in Thailand serves as a beacon of hope for all our current students. They have shown that with discipline and heart, there are no limits to what they can achieve.”

Philippines Posts Historic Finish

The success of the DSB alumni helped the Philippines reach a milestone 45 gold, 37 silver, and 52 bronze medals, marking the country’s most successful outing in the history of the ASEAN Para Games. The Philippines finished fourth overall in the medal standings, surpassing its previous records.

While host Thailand claimed the overall championship, the story of the Games for many was the rise of provincial talents. The triumph of Granaderos, Montecillo, and Gamao underscores the importance of grassroots support for para-athletes in Mindanao and beyond.
